Beware of “Ghost Tapping” Scams

November 21, 2025

Scammers are using hidden wireless card readers to tap your debit or credit card without you even noticing. It can happen in crowded places, during a distraction, or when someone asks you to “just tap quick” without showing the total.

How it works:
Criminals carry small NFC readers in a bag or jacket. If they get close enough to your wallet or pocket, they can process a charge instantly—no swipe, no PIN, no permission.

Protect yourself:
• Use an RFID-blocking wallet
• Always check the amount before tapping
• Turn on real-time transaction alerts
• Watch for small “test” charges
• Avoid tap-to-pay in high-risk areas

If you spot an unauthorized charge, freeze your card and contact your bank right away.
