Sensible spending in the summer

August 5, 2019

As the warm weather moves in, so do vacation plans, higher energy bills, more time in the car (and at the gas pump), and new clothing to be bought. It can be hard to save money, let alone keep a budget with all of the exciting things that summer brings. But, it doesn’t have to be that way. There are many different avenues that you can take to stay on budget and even cut costs on your normal everyday activities. Take into consideration few of these methods and you’ll be on track to a heathier financial future in no time at all.

Plan ahead

If there’s anything about life that is consistent is that it is full of inconsistencies. Try and curb those surprises by planning ahead with your savings. If you know you’ll be wanting to take a big vacation, buy your tickets earlier and start saving more than a month in advance. The more time you have to save, the more at ease you’ll feel as the trip approaches.

Pause your gym membership

With warm weather comes more opportunity to exercise outside. Pause your gym membership and start running or utilizing outdoor activities like sand volleyball or swimming to get your heart rate up. Save the indoor equipment for the fall!

Save on transportation

Rather than driving your car everyday consider riding your bike if it works in your commute or asking a co-worker to carpool. You’ll not only save on gas money and car ware and tare, but you’ll also be living more environmentally conscious.

Skip the grocery store

A perfect hobby in the summertime is gardening. Not only does it get you outside and enjoying some fresh air, but it can also replace you running to the grocery store every week for fresh veggies or herbs. Or, if you don’t have the perfect green thumb, you can always stop by your local farmers market for fresh produce at a lower price.

Anytime of the year can be an expensive one if you don’t take the time to plan properly. Make sure you are still putting together your monthly spend budget. But also don’t forget to have fun as well. Rewarding yourself with a few small splurges is a great way to stay motivated all while still staying within your means.
